A well-known restaurant that has been driving the unique Western food culture of Japan. Western food eaten in a retro interior is full of nostalgic tastes

After the Meiji Restoration, under orders to modernize the country, Japanese culture rapidly became westernized. Food culture was no exception. Western food is one of the genres of cuisine that has evolved by adding unique Japanese elements to it. According to the definition of the Japan "Yoshoku" Association, "Western food comes from the West, but has evolved in Japan to be eaten with rice."
In Nihonbashi, there is a restaurant that is widely known as a famous Western restaurant. It is ”Taimeiken.” A long-established Western-style restaurant founded in 1965, the first president was Shingo Modegi, and the second was Masaaki Modegi, who promoted Western food culture in Japan. It is famous for the idea of the dandelion omelet that appears in the “Dandelion” directed by Juzo Itami, representing many works, and this is still a popular menu. The third president, Mr. Koji Shigeki, is one of the most popular persons on TV variety shows.
Western food that can be eaten in an old-fashioned restaurant reminiscent of the Showa era is full of nostalgic warmth.

Editor's Recommendations

A menu which covers all the basics of Western food. The popular omelet rice and the reasonable special lunch are recommended.
This restaurant covers the western food menus that we generally envision; Curry & Rice, Pork cutlet, Croquette, Fried Shrimp, Omelet rice, Macaroni au Gratin, etc. The restaurant on the first floor serves as a Western restaurant for casual dining, and the second floor serves as a full-fledged Western restaurant with every luxury imaginable. This time, I will write about the restaurant on the first floor which I visited.
All menus are of high quality, but the most popular menu is omelet rice. The lineup includes a variety of dishes, starting with “Dandelion Omelet Rice (Itami Junzo style)”. The eggs used here are selected special-grade eggs. I feel a strong preference to the choice of materials. In addition, a special lunch can be eaten at lunchtime from 11:00 to 14:00 on weekdays. Western dishes such as “Crab Cream Croquette” and “Minced Meat Cutlet” are recommended because they can be eaten at a reasonable price.
Interior is decorated in dark brown and white colors. The restaurant has an old-fashioned atmosphere reminiscent of Showa.
I visited the restaurant on the first floor of Taimeiken's own building. At lunch time, there was a line of customers waiting outside the restaurant for lunch. Entering the building, there is a small lobby with chairs for customers waiting to enter. Going to the right leads to the restaurant on the first floor, and if you go to the back and go up the stairs, you will reach the restaurant on the second floor. The wall at the entrance of the restaurant on the 1st floor is decorated daily with paintings by Tamotsu Nagai who is Nihonbashi-born painter. When you enter the restaurant, you will be surrounded by an old-fashioned atmosphere that makes you feel Showa strongly. Dark brown beams and columns, tables, chairs and white walls. It is an interior that makes you feel the history of the restaurant which at the same time being relaxing. The lighting shade at the same time old-fashioned and fashionable. At the top of the window-side column is a clock with a spoon and fork, which makes it playful.
The kitchen is in the back left after entering the restaurant, and is hidden from the customer seats by a white tiled screen. While open kitchens are selling points in many restaurants, you can feel the Showa atmosphere in these places.
“Coleslaw” and “Borscht” are essential for ordering. The drink menu has all the basics.
When looking at the “Taimeiken” menu, you'll notice that there are mysterious dishes. They are “Coleslaw” and “Borsch” in the category of “Special dishes”. Above all, it is surprising that both prices are 50 yen (tax included). The price is significantly different from other menus, so if you don't know it'll be a bit of a mistake. Of course, there is no mistake in the price, and it is definitely a menu recommended by the shop with confidence. Coleslaw has a slightly sweet and sour taste. The borscht is not a Russian one, but a simple Western-style vegetable soup. Both dishes serve as an appetizer to enhance appetite before enjoying the main dish. The drink menu is not as large as the dining bar, but basic drinks such as beer, sake, whiskey and wine are kept. Of course, soft drinks such as coffee and desserts are also prepared.

Cutlet lunch

Looking at the “Taimeiken” menu, you can see that Western food is well categorized. The dish I chose this time is a cutlet lunch, which belongs to the category of “rice dishes”. It is a cutlet bento mixed with Western food such as curry and rice. What will be served?
Soon, a multi-tiered food box was brought to me. When the lid of the box was opened, a pork cutlet in a lacquered box appeared instead of a pork cutlet bowl. In this restaurant, pork cutlet in a lacquered box was called a cutlet lunch.
Pork loin cutlet is served with simmered eggs, boiled onions and soup stock on top of rice. A snow pea is placed on the top, giving a visual accent. I started eating it immediately.
The soup stock of a pork cutlet in a lacquered box is sweet, and the eggs are fluffy and half-ripe and sharpen the appetite. Under the cutlet, rice is spread on the bottom of the lacquered box. I was a little surprised that the rice was covered with chopped Nori (dried seaweed) and the sliced mushrooms were on top. This is an act that Western food can do.
